A Beginner’s Guide to Caring for Exotic Flowers

Love the tropics with their palm trees, ocean breeze, and delicious tropical fruits? If you don’t have the money or time to go to the tropics currently but still want to bring the essence of the tropics to your home, then buying exotic flowers is the second-best compromise.

But you can’t treat exotic flowers as you would roses or lilies you buy from the flower store, as they are more fragile and high maintenance. They need a lot more care and attention from your side.

Keep reading to find out more about exotic flower maintenance, so you can keep your exotic flowers healthy and vibrant for longer than a day or two.

Put Them in Water Right Away

As with other flowers, you don’t want to leave exotic flowers without water for too long. If they were delivered to your office, then as soon as you can, put them in cool, clean water.

The water should be at room temperature or slightly cool, but not cold or hot.

Trim only about 1/2 to 1 inch off the stem before placing it into water. Use a sharp pair of scissors or a knife, one you keep specifically for plants and plant-related activities. Don’t use kitchen scissors here, so you can avoid cross-contamination and spreading germs and bacteria.

To avoid crushing the stem, cut them at an angle. This will also maximize water absorption which is key for exotic flowers, since they are from the tropics and receive copious amounts of moisture in the form of rain and dew.

Do Not Refrigerate Them

For typical flowers you receive from the flower store, like tulips or roses, you could place them in the refrigerator and they would last longer. But exotic flowers do not like the cold and they will start browning or dying quite quickly if you place them into the chill of the refrigerator.

Do not place them in temperatures below 60 degrees or in a cooler.

Place Them Far Away From Heat Sources and Drafts

Even though you might imagine they would like the heat and wouldn’t mind a hot sunlit room, exotic flowers don’t grow in direct sunshine in their natural environment. They are usually covered by a canopy of trees, shrubs, and other plants.

That’s why you will want to place these exotic flowers far away from any heat sources and any cold drafts. There’s no need to make their life harder than it’s already going to be in your home, far away from their typical environment.

But No Chilly or Air Conditioned Rooms, Either

Again, as with refrigeration, exotic flowers don’t like cold rooms, either. You don’t want to have the air conditioning turned up to the max when exotic flowers are sitting in your home.

Maybe it’s a hot day and you are feeling the aftereffects of it. Then place the exotic flowers in another room without the air conditioning switched on, as you chill yourself in the air-conditioned room.

Keep Them Away From Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight is too harsh for most plants and flowers, and exotic flowers are no exception to the rule.

You want to place your exotic flowers at a spot in the room where the sunlight doesn’t fall directly, but not in a dark corner, either.

Misting Is Essential

Some exotic flowers love misting, others do not. Speak to your flower distributor or florist about specific caretaking tips for your exotic flowers.

Mostly though, exotic flowers love misting and you should do this at least once a day, if not more often.

Trim Them Once or Twice a Week

If your exotic flowers haven’t died after a week, then you can trim them further to ensure that water absorption stays steady and that dead leaves or a deadened part of the stem don’t kill the flowers.

Once or twice a week is more than enough. Don’t go overboard with this, either.

Change the Water in the Vase Every Day

Hopefully, you will remember to do this. Put a reminder on your phone, in case you are the forgetful kind. Exotic flowers are high maintenance as we already mentioned and that means they will not be happy sitting in day-old dirty water.

Change the water once a day every day and make sure you use room temperature water to replace it.

How Long Will Exotic Flowers Last With Proper Care?

If you are careful with your exotic flowers and do all the things mentioned above without fail, then your exotic flowers can last as long as a week to 14 days! That’s quite a long time for flowers, in general.

Since you are spending quite a penny on exotic plants and flowers, you don’t want to let them go without a fight, even though it does require a bit of work on your part.

Exotic Flower Maintenance Isn’t Easy but Worth It

The gorgeous vibrant blooms of exotic flowers will stay colorful and showy as long as you keep up the aftercare. Otherwise, they will blacken or brown and wilt faster than you can call in the reinforcements.

If you are going to spend hundreds of dollars on buying exotic flowers, then you must do what you can to keep them safe and happy. Like the article above? We have many more interesting ones for you to browse through. Bookmark our site and come back daily to check up on new topics and blog posts.
